Toyota Solid State Hybrid, Used Tesla Prices, Electric Vehicle Troubleshooters, Aria and Paper: The Week in Reverse

Which electric truck has been indefinitely suspended this week, and which truck has been put on hold?

And why could a switch to electric cars spell the end of three-box sedans?

This is our look back at the opposite week – here at green car reports—For the week ending January 14, 2022.

Don’t wait for Toyota electric cars with solid batteries. The auto industry’s chief scientist confirmed in an interview last week that Toyota’s hybrid car will be the first to have solid-state technology by 2025 — and it looks like it could be a Prius.

Tesla Model S Plaid Track Mode

Tesla Model S Plaid Track Mode

Tesla revealed the track mode for the Model S Plaid. With torque vectoring, improved cooling, and more aggressive suspension settings—including more regenerative braking from the engines instead—it should avoid the brake overheating issue that some testers found.

This week we also rounded up and internalized some of the big trends we’re looking at in 2022. Dealers have generated more profit per transaction in 2021 than in any recent year, amid tight supply and strong demand. With the same restrictions applied to hot electric models like the Ford F-150 Lightning and others, do state franchise laws hamper the adoption of electric vehicles? Conventional three-box sedans could be a thing of the past in the electric age, where leaner kammback designs allow for better aerodynamics and greater range. Delivery giants like FedEx and Amazon are also going the extra mile to eliminate the “circle of shame” left by frequent stops in the neighborhood for diesel trucks — which is why electric delivery vans are in great demand, with profits in the services that support them.

Volkswagen has added more to the ID.4 electric SUV in its second model. The 2022 VW ID.4 engine gets a greater range—accurate EPA ratings—as well as charging speed, plug-and-charge capability and an auto-stabilization feature. Although some of that comes via an over-the-air update.

The Nissan Leaf is still stuck. With the price of the Nissan Leaf dropping last year, you’ll coexist with the Ariya crossover across dealer groups. Although the continuation of the electric vehicle tax credit can play a role in how long the happy coexistence lasts.

After skyrocketing prices for new Tesla models, used Teslas prices have skyrocketed in 2021.

Volkswagen, the most ambitious of the global automakers, reported that it effectively doubled the number of electric vehicles it delivered globally in 2021 — although that includes Porsche, Audi and other brands, it’s still less than half of Tesla’s EV deliveries.

Continue analysis of Consumer Reports Released late last year, the Consumer Advocate released some additional details about what makes electric vehicles problematic — and why hybrid models are among the most reliable of all.

Rivian sponsors tier 2 destination chargers overseen by the nonprofit Build Charger, as part of its Waypoint program. Those announced this week will meet the need for active EV owners in Yosemite and Golden Gate.

Shipments of the Tesla Cybertruck may be delayed until 2023, according to a report by Reuters citing an internal source. CEO Elon Musk had already hinted at the layout and feature changes — likely to be detailed with the schedule in a full product update later this month.

Bollinger B2 Production Intent

Michigan startup Bollinger has discontinued its B1 electric SUV and B2 electric SUV — so much so that it’s bringing back deposits that were paid on those off-road trucks. Instead, it will focus all its efforts on electric commercial vehicles.

Gains in battery life of up to 30% and counteracting degradation can be achieved with the “energized” method made possible by US Department of Energy research – although the idea has yet to translate into actual use.

Charging in multi-unit buildings will require some special strategies to avoid demand fees that can increase buildings’ energy bills by thousands of dollars per month. One company’s solutions aim to stifle this demand in the electrical panel.

More than two years ago, California refused to buy state cars from General Motors, as the automaker sided with the Trump administration in trying to strip the state of the authority to set its own auto emissions rules. With a letter from GM stating that it was “committed to complying with California regulators,” the relationship returned.

And for something we’re still trying to digest: Study results from Deloitte played the bumbling role this week, suggesting that the tipping point in the mass market for electric vehicles could be far beyond what most other analysts have suggested. It found that Americans are not interested in electric vehicles due to cost and range concerns, with only 4% aiming to make an electric vehicle their next car.
